collaboration with – OITNB cupcake tutorial

Good evening everyone,

today I would like to talk about my cooperation with Amicella for the Home-Entertainment release of the third season of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK.

Excluseviely for Amicella I created a cupcake tutorial including cupcake-toppers I designed myself. If you would like to read the article (german) online please visit

The third season of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK is available on DVD & Blu-ray from 2 June. Today I would like to show the english version of my cupcake tutorial and the cupcake-toppers, which were inspired by the show.

What do you need?

For the 12 chocolate-bombs you need:

175g soft butter
175g sugar
1 pack vanilla sugar
2 eggs
100g cream
200g dark chocolate
180g flour
½ packet of baking powder
20g cocoa powder (baking cocoa)

Begin with pre-heating your oven to 200 degrees. If available, take a muffin baking pan and placed the cupcake paper in the pan . Alternatively, you can also do it without the baking pan.

For me it is most convenient to prepare everything beforehand. Weigh all the ingredients and set them aside in seperate bowls. This also includes chopping the chocolate into pieces (not too small!).
Take a large bowl and add the soft butter, the sugar, the vanilla sugar and the eggs.

Blend everything With an electric mixer, then fold in the cream. Add the chocolate chips into the dough and fold them in properly.
Finally add the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder and stir the ingredients to a smooth dough.

Now you place the dough in even amounts into the pan and bake them at 180 degrees for 20 minutes on the middle rack ov the oven.

Let the cupcakes cool down inside the pan. For your icing/frosting it is important that the cupcakes are completely cooled, otherwise the heat will soften the icing and it would melt right off from your cupcakes.

While the cupcakes cool down you can prepare the cupcake-toppers.

You will need:
printed cupcake-toppers
white, solid drawing paper or white cardboard
wooden sticks
round nail scissors, glue, pincers to cut the wooden sticks

version 1

version 2

Glue the printed cupcake-toppers on to the firm white drawing paper and let it dry for 10 minutes. For each cupcake you need the front (picture) and the back (quote). Now cut the individual parts for cupcake-toppers with the round nail scissor and glue the picture and the quote, with the wooden stick in the between, together.

For the super tasty icing you will need:
125g soft butter
125g icing sugar (sifted)
150g Philadelphia cream cheese
orange food coloring (Brauns Heitmann Crazy Colors)
possibly red food coloring

Sift the icing sugar into a bowl and set it aside.
Add the butter into your clean, grease-free and dry mixing bowl. Turn on your mixer and beat the butter for at least 3-4 minutes. The butter will change color and start to look white-ish with time and will be very fluffy. Scrape the sides of the bowl in between, so that everything will have the same consistency.

After that, gradually add the icing sugar, a few tablespoons at a time and mix it into the butter (careful when stirring-always on the lowest level, otherwise your kitchen will be dusted in icing sugar).
After all the icing sugar is incorporated, turn your mixer on full speed to incorporate even more air into the icing.

Now take the Philadelphia cream cheese and add mix it in as well (stage 1 on hand mixer).
To adapt the icing to the OITNB theme, add orange food coloring. If coloring icing, hte best food color would be powdered or gel food coloring. Avoid using liquid food color, since it would liquefy the consistency of the icing. To get a darker orange I also added a bit or red food coloring as well.

Now take a piping bag and place a piping tip (I used Wilton’s – 1B) in the bag.

Put the bag into a glas and fill it with your orange icing.

If you pipe for the first time, you can practice on your clean work surface before you go into decorating the cupcakes. For me, the easiest way to pipe is starting at the edge and work towards the center.
After you are done icing all the cupcakes you can add the homemade cupcake-toppers.

We hope you will try the recipes and show us your creations on Instagram under #OITNBcupcake .
I had so much fun that I also had to do a matching nail design.
